“A Servant's Saint Graph and Sword are the same. The more and more you patiently temper them, the stronger they get.”

Senji Muramasa - the most famed swordsmith in Japanese history, definitely does not fail to make a great impression, and not just because he has a certain familiar face. Possessing an extremely powerful and explosive skill set, Muramasa is an all-purpose AoE Arts Saber that can cut through almost any form of content as sharply as his blades.

Muramasa’s most notable aspect is certainly his Noble Phantasm - Tsumukari Muramasa. This Noble Phantasm has 4 incredible separate effects, including removing all offensive buffs from enemies, ignoring their defensive buffs, and deal increasingly more damage when used consecutively as it increases his Arts Performance and NP Damage for 3 turns before dealing damage. Further augmenting this snowbally gameplay loop where Muramasa mercilessly slaughters waves of enemies over the course of multiple turns are his three no less powerful skills.

Tameshi-Mono B+ is an omni card booster that grants an astounding 50% buff to all of Muramasa cards for 1 turn, on top of a Star Bomb and 1 turn Critical Star Gather Rate buff. Karmic Eye A grant Muramasa the ability to bypass Invincibility for 1 turn, a whopping 100% Critical Damage buff for 3 turns, and another 100% Critical Damage buff for 1 turn against enemies with Invincibility or Evade. Last but not least, Muramasa gets 50% NP Gauge from Flame EX, and a unique buff that lets him gain NP Gauge whenever he attacks normally.

Any of Muramasa’ skills or Noble Phantasm is almost enough to be as good as some Servants’ entire kit, and when they all come together, we get a vicious killing machine that can repeatedly mow down enemies with intensity, either with his Noble Phantasm or his nasty Critical Hits. Muramasa shines best in farming with other Arts Support Servants, where his Noble Phantasm is highly loopable and gets progressively stronger after each use, but his Challenge Quest performance is top tier as well, with some highly desirable effects like ignoring Invincibility, and offensive buff removal. Muramasa does have a very obvious flaw - he has zero defensive options in any of his skills nor Noble Phantasm. Nonetheless, being an Arts Servant, Muramasa naturally has great synergy with some of the best defensive supports in the game, such as Altria Caster or Tamamo-no-Mae.

All in all, Muramasa is a premium Servant that can easily contend for one of the highest places amongst Damage Dealers. Any Master lucky enough to recruit this grumpy old man in a sexy hero of justice body will surely enjoy one of the most satisfying gameplay loops in the game.

Incredible Wave-clearing Prowess

With a 50% Battery, an Arts Noble Phantasm that increasingly does more damage and refunds more NP, and powerful steroids, Muramasa has no trouble mowing down multiple waves of enemies, both in terms of Damage and NP Refund. His third skill’s unique effect and frequent Critical Hits with his Arts cards also let him rack up NP Gauge easily with Brave Chains.

High Critical Burst

With Eye for Craftsmanship giving a 100% Critical Damage buff for 3 turns, and an additional 100% against enemies with Evade or Invincibility, Muramasa can dish out silly numbers with his Critical Hit. This skill also grant an on-demand Star Bomb for the Critical turn, ensuring Muramasa has fuel for his onslaught.

Great Answers To Challenge Quest Gimmicks

Muramasa brings more than just damage to the table. His Noble Phantasm has an incredibly rare AoE Offensive Buff-wipe that can help neuter dangerous bosses that like to stack removable Attack buffs. Furthermore, Muramasa can ignore Evade, Invincibility, and Defensive buffs, which is another highly prized niche amongst Damage Dealers, as it allows them to maintain fantastic offensive performance against many annoying challenges.

No Survivability Options

All of Muramasa’s skills are geared toward offense, with no effect that bolsters his survivability. Thankfully, this is not a particularly big issue for him as Muramasa is almost always used alongside powerful Arts Support Servants that can provide protection for him.

Mediocre Damage without Support

When it comes to Arts NP loopers, Muramasa's NP damage is actually on the lower end, despite his extremely impressive buff values. As a result, he often needs premiere Arts Support to hit damage values required for clearing certain waves, and can have trouble clearing higher-HP farming waves for some quests. Masters should keep this in mind, since this tends to relegate him specifically to Lancer waves rather than being an all-purpose farmer.

Muramasa is one of those Servants whose skills are all powerful and worth leveling. He is most often used as a wave clearer for farming, thus his two skills that directly bolster this aspect should be leveled as soon as possible to improve his damage ceiling and consistency.

  • Tameshi-Mono B+  – This skill serves as Muramasa’s main steroid. Usually this is best used for the third wave of any farming mission, or any wave where he needs the most damage to burst through. Since this boosts all of Muramasa’s cards, it is also advisable to use in turn where he can perform a Brave Chain.
  • Karmic Eye A – This skill is Muramasa’s primary Critical damage buff. The boost from raising levels in this skill is massive, but it does not contribute much for farming, so it can be delayed until after his two other skills are raised.
  • Flame EX – This skill is definitely Muramasa’s most important skill to level, as both of the NP Battery effects scale with level. This skill vastly improves Muramasa looping capacity and flexibility in choosing Support and Craft Essences.

Craft Essence Recommendation

Muramasa is best with stats that boost his NP looping. Starting NP Gauge grants him the most breathing room as it alleviates pressure in picking Supports for him, while also helping against enemy waves with low NP refund, such as Berserkers. Arts Performance, NP Gain Up and NP Damage Up are all fantastic options to boost either his damage or NP refund, or both. Critical Damage Up and Arts Critical Damage are alternatives for Masters looking to capitalize on his Critical potential.

  • Ocean Flyer / Dive to Blue / Painting Summer / New Beginning: Hybrid Starting NP Gauge and Arts Performance are the best Craft Essences for Muramasa for general purposes, letting him access his Noble Phantasm immediately while not overly compromising his damage.
  • Black Grail / Heaven’s Feel: The best general damage boost Craft Essence for any NP Loopers. The extra punch is particularly useful when high HP waves will be more and more common in future events and Muramasa is one of those Servants whose NP refund is good enough to capitalize on this.
  • Royal Icing / Mark on a Smiling Face: Hybrid Craft Essences with multiple relevant stats for Muramasa that will be good for most general battles.
  • Another Ending / Holy Heart / Conversation on the Hot Sands: These Craft Essences focuses on boosting Muramasa’s Critical niche.

Character Info

A swordsmith from Kuwana of the Ise Province, whose title was Uemon-no-jou during the Bunki Era of Japan. He is considered to be the founder of the swordsmith school famed for forging the sharpest swords of the Warring States period of Japan.

While some documents dating to the Edo period claim the Muramasa school lasted for three generations, from the Jouji Era (1362-1368) to the Ouei Era (1394-1428), the oldest sword confirmed to have come from the Muramasa school was made during the first year of the Bunki Era (1501). For this reason, in this game Muramasa of the Bunki Era will be treated as the founding generation.

He appears in the "Seven Duels of Swordmasters" as a Heroic Spirit sent by the Counter Force, and he appears as a Heroic Spirit summoned by the Foreign God in this world that was wiped clean. What truths does this man hide? What are his motivations?

"Huh? There's nothin' mysterious about me! All I care about is doin' my job right!"

Profile 1

Height/Weight: 167cm, 58kg
Origin: History
Region: Japan
Alignment: Chaotic-Balanced
Gender: Male
"I've got the heart of a dying old man and a body that can take all sorts of abuse. Is this what you call regaining one's youth?"

Profile 2

An old man who dedicated his entire life to forging swords. Upon his manifestation, he took on the appearance of a vital young man, but he is mentally closer to his older self. He is brash, does not hesitate, and hardly gives a thought for the consequences of his actions. He is often blunt, and it would be a bit of a stretch to say he is friendly. Though he may initially come off as coldhearted, he is quite caring and even chivalrous when one takes the time to get to know him.

This may be Muramasa himself, but it is at least partly the influence of his vessel's personality...or it could be that his persona is simply that of his vessel, had the boy grown to be an old man.

He is a workaholic who takes pride in a job well done, no matter who his client is or what the job entails. He may often be ruthless or even cold when it comes to his work, but at the same time he has the integrity to never do heretical work.

Profile 3

During Japan's Warring States period, when a vast number of swords were made, many renowned swordsmith workshops existed throughout Japan. At times, these swordsmiths would assist the warriors by repairing swords that were damaged during battle. Among these craftsmen, a swordsmith from Kuwana in the Ise Province named Senji Muramasa was known to be a master, and his swords were especially sought after by the warriors of Mikawa.

There is one particular legend about the swords from the Muramasa clan. The legend said that these swords were demonic blades, and they were to bring calamity to the house of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

The sword that killed Ieyasu's grandfather, Matsudaira Kiyoyasu...
The sword that wounded Ieyasu's father, Hirotada...
The blade that beheaded his eldest son, Matsudaira Nobuyasu, during his seppuku ritual...
And the sword that wounded Ieyasu himself...
All of these were said to have borne the maker's mark of Muramasa.

Legendary demonic swords that slay the Tokugawa...Muramasa was truly a terrifying blade. Muramasa swords are also often portrayed as blood-soaked demonic blades in several kabuki plays and other narratives, as well as legends the revolve around the adversaries of the Tokugawa clan.

Yui Shousetsu, who plotted to overthrow the Shogunate in 1651 A.D., is said to have owned a Muramasa blade, and Sanada Yukimura is also said to have owned one according to the series of biographies titled "Meisho Kotogiroku."

By the Bakumatsu period, Saigou Takamori led prominent figures in an attempt to overthrow the Shogunate, and they also sought out the Muramasa. During the Boshin War, it is said that Prince Arisugawa Taruhito, the Governor-General of the east, wielded a Muramasa blade.

Profile 4

Territory Creation: A
Senji Muramasa uses his own workshop, his forge, as his base. Obviously this skill is different from what mages use, but this Caster class skill is thought to have been granted to him upon his manifestation as a Servant as an interpretation of his abilities. He possesses an unparalleled Territory Creation ability, as he was an eminent craftsman.

Connoisseur of Blades: A
This skill is similar to Aesthetic Appreciation and represents understanding of armaments. A skill that allows him to instantly discern how to fight against normal weapons (not Noble Phantasms). The user gains an understanding of armaments other than swords if the skill is ranked above A. For allies, the skill can give sound advice and provide insight into the enemy's weakness.

Sire's Ill Omen: B
A skill derived from the legends about the swords bearing the Muramasa signature, the so-called "wicked swords of Muramasa." The swords created by Senji Muramasa and his school are said to bring misfortune to the leaders of the Tokugawa clan. In FGO, this skill is used as a special attack against administrators and kings.

Profile 5

Tameshi-Mono: B+
An exercise meant to test the sharpness and sturdiness of a sword. Senji Muramasa is able to draw out the power within a weapon he touches, and if he is willing, he can release the weapon's full strength, though this destroys it in a single swing.

Karmic Eye: A
An ability that is dormant within one's body. It's a variation of Clairvoyance, and enhances both static and kinetic eyesight. It is a type of insight specialized for combat. He lacked the proper foresight of Clairvoyance...or at least that was supposed to be the limitation...but with Muramasa spending his lifetime peering into destiny in the flames of his forge, his eagle-eyed gaze not only enabled him to capture his prey, but also fate itself.

Flame: EX
Using one's whole body and soul to work the forge, to the point of burning themself.

"Every path, every desire, every injustice...
All of it has been for this single swing."

Profile 6

[Tsumukari Muramasa]
Rank: A+
NP Type: Anti-Personnel
Range: 1 - 10
Maximum Targets: 10

Unalloyed Blade Works.
A Noble Phantasm that creates the ultimate sword. After deploying a unique Reality Marble, a wasteland of countless swords similar to the Heroic Spirit Emiya's Unlimited Blade Works, all the swords shatter and scatter like snow crystals to reveal a single blade in Senji Muramasa's hands. A single slash of this cuts time, space, and even fate.

The blade's name: Tsumukari Muramasa. The term Tsumukari refers to Tsumukari-no-Tachi, the sacred sword of Ama-no-Murakumo/Kusanagi that emerged from the tail of Japan's greatest serpent and calamity, the red-eyed, eight-headed, and eight-tailed monster called Yamata-no-Orochi, which was killed by Susanoo-no-Mikoto.

Victory 2 Dammit, I got all riled up! Guess going into battle once in a while is a good thing!
Level up 1 Ah, thanks! Keep 'em coming!
...What? Is it really that weird for me to use English?
Level up 2 A Servant's Spirit Origin is like a sword.
The more you patiently work them, the stronger they get.
Level up 3 It's always nice to be able to hone your skills, no matter how old you are. I can't wait for the next job.
Ascension 1 What? You've been taking good care of me, so I can't stay looking like some rogue warrior forever.
This is how I used to look back when I was building my forge. That was also when I struck out on my own, independent from my master.
Well there you have it.
Ascension 2 There ain't even time for me to breathe. Are you the type to demand rush orders?
Ascension 3 Well yeah, I guess you become important when you're the head of somethin'. I was never satisfied with my work, but as you can see, I blinked and suddenly had apprentices. On top of that, my social standing changed too... I wound up a nobleman of Kuwana.
As you can see, my body's a little beat up, but in exchange my skills have been honed.
I'll do my job properly.
Ascension 4 What a view. Come on, this isn't the time to get all nervous.
I lived by the sword. Throughout my life I held this foolish dream of trying to keep others alive using deadly steel.
And I thought that stupidity would end with Muramasa... But honestly, humans never seem to learn.
I am a mere arms dealer who lived long ago.
So long as I shame neither you nor my vessel, I will continue to wield this sword to save humanity.
Bond Level 1 Let me reintroduce myself. I am Senji Muramasa, a swordsmith from Kuwana of the Ise Province. I was later known as the founder of the Muramasa School, which continued for many years... That how you all knew of me?
Even an obstinate old man like me would be shocked to learn that my name's been passed down for hundreds of years.
Bond Level 2 There are many tasks involved in swordsmithing: mining the mountains, gathering sand, forging steel, molding the sword, mounting the scabbard, and sharpening the blade.
They're not all that hard to do alone, but you need a lot of artisans if you want to produce many swords at once. And that's why swordsmiths work in groups.
Isn't that concept similar in Chaldea? It's only when everyone does a good job that they make a name for themselves.
Bond Level 3 My Spirit Origin uses a modern person's body as a vessel. Happened 'cause if you summoned Muramasa himself, you would've ended up with a decrepit geezer. The Heroic Spirit Muramasa simply offered his skills to the physical body. So that's why my temperament and nature don't really reflect Muramasa's. Rather, it reflects the vessel's personality were he to grow old.
But honestly, I never thought there would be someone else who would have the same principles, lived a similar life, and be as stubborn as I am...
Bond Level 4 Have you been eating properly? If you're getting hungry, tell me. I may not be that comfortable financially, but I can at least support one young sapling...
What? You receive a lucrative salary? You're afraid of gaining weight from the delicious meals you eat three times a day?
Well then, fine. Get the hell outta my face.
Bond Level 5 I'll be honest, I wasn't up to the task of being Muramasa initially. I may be Muramasa, but my persona is based on the hypothetical notion of this body living Muramasa's life.
You know, it's like that book Murasaki's reading about some modern person getting reborn in the Bunki Period of Japan. And that's why I've felt like I was just in someone's dream.
But now I think this Muramasa's all right, since I gained a good apprentice. And I can't go and die before they do, right?
Conversation 1 Hey, it's time to go out on our rounds, Master. You'll lose your edge if you slack off.
Conversation 2 Guess I'm pretty astute about the hierarchal status in jobs, you know? I may not bow to anyone, but whenever I get a job request, I'm always grateful as I work. Even if the client is some nasty son of a bitch, I make them a perfect, pure sword!
Conversation 3 Without a Master, a Servant can't manifest.
Without a Servant, a Master won't last long.
It's a give-and-take relationship. That hasn't changed, not even since my past life.
Conversation 4 (Miyamoto Musashi, Miyamoto Musashi (Berserker)) Miyamoto Musashi? Yeah I know Musashi. The female one, actually.
She was a scrappy swordswoman, but she also had such dignity... That's one of the few memories Muramasa brought back to the Throne with him.
...I do hope that vagabond managed to reach what she sought in the end.
Conversation 5 (EMIYA) You know that Archer with the big ol' flappy red cloak? Not a fan. Dunno why, but I get the willies whenever I see him... He some kinda bug or something?
Conversation 6 (EMIYA (Alter)) Emiya Alter... Nothing makes sense here...
I don’t get the same spine-tingling sensation from him, but somethin's definitely not right.
To begin with, he doesn't treat his weapons with care. Oh I get it. He's one of those types who's all-in on commercialism, right?
Conversation 7 (Altria Pendragon) The king of Britain is here, right?
You best let her know what you're thinkin' straight up. Kings like that one tend to take all the burdens onto themselves otherwise.
What, is it that weird for me to be concerned for others? I can't help it when I'm really worried, okay?
Conversation 8 (All Saberfaces aside from Altria Pendragon) You know, I've forged a lotta copies of the same blade, but don't you think there's just too many of you, Your Majesty? You plannin' on filling every role yourself?
Conversation 9 (Yagyu Munenori)'s the great sword instructor of the Tokugawa. Yeah, Muramasa is anti-Tokugawa, but it's not because I got a personal grudge against them. Just somethin' that got tacked on later more or less fictionally. If Tokugawa was a fan of mine, then obviously they would've been carrying Muramasa blades when they died...
Conversation 10 (Ibuki-Douji at Asc 1) Whoa, who the heck's that girl!? She's huge!
...Wait a minute. Do you feel a divine air coming from her?
Don't tell me... She can't be... Could she be the grand avatar of Mt. Ibuki!?
S-so that giant sword she's carrying is THE sword of Kusanagi!? H-h-holy shit... I need offerings! Offerings!
Likes What I like?
Obviously good sand and fire.
I like fish too. And rice balls. I ain't a drinker though. I do eat dumplings.
Dislikes There's too many things I don't like; I can't name them all!
If I had to pick one out, it'd be...that bastard Rasputin.
Just seeing his face ticks me off for some reason...
About the Holy Grail A Holy Grail that grants wishes sounds like something everyone would covet. I wonder how many artisans I could support using that... Oh, you weren't looking for practical answers?
Well then, maybe I'd wish to see a genuine Kusanagi one of these days...
During an Event There's a festival, Master.
Let's head out quick and go get something good to eat.
Birthday There's no work today. Come on, sit right there.
Let's start with this. This thing called a birthday...cake? Am I saying it right?
Why do you look so surprised?
I'm a swordsmith so I don't use this skill much, but in this form, I really know my way around a kitchen.
Plus you know, I ain't got the foggiest idea what kind of gift would be fitting for you, so cut me some slack for breaking out these skills of mine.
Summon Saber, Senji Muramasa. I've come in answer to your summons.
I'm just an ordinary blacksmith, but as a Pseudo-Servant, suppose I can at least imitate the ways of a warrior, too.
Hm? Why the look? You somehow look both smug and surprised at the same time...
Maybe I showed up a bit too early...
Battle Start 1 (Asc 3/4) This blade won't last the night. I'll wear this one out before I get home.
Battle Start 2 (Asc 3/4) A trial blade? Dumbass, I ain't gonna sign something that'll last only for a night.
Skill 1 (Asc 3/4) I just want to retire.
Skill 2 (Asc 3/4) Huh. I guess that's possible too.
Skill 3 (Asc 3/4) I'm used to sparks.
Skill 4 (Asc 3/4) That's a good looking temper pattern.
Skill 5 (Asc 3/4) No matter how old I get, this still gets me excited!
Skill 6 (Asc 3/4) It's a rice ball. Want one?
Command Card 1 (Asc 3/4) Yeah.
Command Card 2 (Asc 3/4) Fine.
Command Card 3 (Asc 3/4) Watch carefully.
Noble Phantasm Card 1 (Asc 3/4) until the very end.
Noble Phantasm Card 2 (Asc 3/4) All sentient beings have the potential for Buddhahood...
Noble Phantasm Card 3 (Asc 3/4) Witness the essence of forging!
Attack 1 (Asc 3/4) Brace yourself!
Attack 2 (Asc 3/4) Ha! Hah! Zei!
Attack 3 (Asc 3/4) Take this!
Attack 4 (Asc 3/4) Yaegaki!
Attack 5 (Asc 3/4) Randou!
Attack 6 (Asc 3/4) Tengu-kiri!
Attack 7 (Asc 3/4) Here's an extra...take it!
Attack 8 (Asc 3/4) Here you go!
Attack 9 (Asc 3/4) I'm closing in!
Extra Attack 1 (Asc 3/4) This is gonna be big!
Extra Attack 2 (Asc 3/4) I've enough weapons stored up.
Noble Phantasm 1 (Asc 3/4) The convergence of many gathers here.
A Tsumukari Muramasa to sever bonds, sever certainty, sever karma.
This is a release from the wheel of fate!
Noble Phantasm 2 (Asc 3/4) In abandoning excess, weight, and speed, I have found myself.
Though it sure took a while...
Watch closely! The heart of the here!
Damage 1 (Asc 3/4) It's tough on these old bones...!
Damage 2 (Asc 3/4) Ugheee!
Incapacitated 1 (Asc 3/4) Leaving work unfinished... Heh, I'm losing my touch.
Incapacitated 2 (Asc 3/4) Heh, those're some sharp moves there! I'm taking some notes!
Victory 1 (Asc 3/4) Come back later. You're not even worth being a straw post for sword training.
Victory 2 (Asc 3/4) Are you eating properly? Weapons aside, you didn't have enough gall.
