Addition to the game’s pretty-boy roster (and boy, we’ve been lacking in those this year), and honorary member of the Akatsuki, Jiang Ziya finally finishes off the Servant silhouette image.

…boy, that ribbon on his weapon and the way his hands were posed made me think it was Archimedes for so long.

First on Jiang’s skill lineup is Primordial Strategy A+. As expected as the author behind a famous treatise on strategy, this provides a pretty powerful combo of buffs for the whole team - 15% Quick Up, Attack Up, and NP Strength Up for 3 turns. Individually these buffs are pretty mediocre, but together they form a pretty formidable buff combo for Jiang himself, then again any allies he pairs with. This totals out to a 52% steroid for his NP over 3 turns, something not many other Servants can compete with in a single skill.

But naturally, this power comes with a drawback, being the harsh 9-turn base cooldown on this skill. While particularly annoying when deploying Jiang Ziya to a Challenge Quest, hopefully this won’t cause any issues in farming. But it’s somewhat fair, considering the potency of this skill’s buffs.

Next on the lineup is God-Sealing Enforcement B. This skill is relatively simple, providing an all-enemy Skill Seal for 1 turn that nobody in their right mind cares about outside of very specific circumstances, and a 50% Effective Damage buff versus both Divine and Demonic (and actually Demonic, not Demon like my mistake last time) trait enemies. This combo is pretty potent at getting its damage bonus, and it has the secondary benefit of applying a buff for each trait individually, not one for both combined. Meaning Jiang will get +100% damage if he’s facing a Demonic and Divine trait enemy, instead of +50%.

Naturally, finding a case where those two traits overlap is pretty rare - the primary offenders are Shuten (all variants), Koyanskaya and Kama (Avenger). But regardless, it hits a wide pool of both generic enemies and Servants - Divinity is hardly rare, after all.

While this makes for a potent power boost, it is still a situational one. And it doesn’t help that the other component of this skill is practically useless. In a given quest you have fairly high odds of hitting one of the two traits in your enemy lineup, but when this thing is a deadweight it sucks.

The cooldown of 8 turns at base is pretty typical, considering the potential power boost this skill can provide.

Last for Jiang Ziya’s skills, and far from least, is Philosophy Key EX. DW really has gotten into the rhythm of not producing a single SSR without a gauge charger, huh?

This skill, while phrased in two components, is essentially 50% total gauge charge for the man himself and 20% for his teammates, with no other effects. Given the fact it’s a 50% gauge charger with bonus gauge for the man’s supports, I’m hardly complaining. Easier composition building, more frequent NP’s, better setup for Jiang’s own supports. It’s a win-win-win.

The actual design of this skill may lean on the boring side - it’d be nice to even have a gimmicky but flavourful effect just to fill in space, but you can’t argue with results. This skill is good, effective for both farming and difficult content, while sitting on a fair 8-turn base cooldown.

As I may have already implied earlier, Jiang is a Quick-focused Rider, and an AOE one at that, which means we’ll be assessing his capability in farming, which is always fun.

But focusing on the NP itself, Dashiben (Literally just God-Striking Whip) is a Quick AOE NP with an inherent +50% effective modifier against Divine enemies (big surprise), and a fairly hefty 20% Quick Resist Down debuff for 3 turns after doing damage. In one fell swoop this NP mistakes Tamamo for Daji, whips her viciously then makes her take more punishment with each successive lash.

While certainly some good side-effects, there isn’t much to talk about regarding them. It’s ultimately just more conditional damage to add to the pile.

What is interesting, however, is this NP’s refund. With 6 hits to count, and Jiang Ziya’s own buffs factored in, this NP pulls off a refund of 13.6% on 3 targets, which is already fairly impressive considering Jiang’s fairly poor personal buffs to his refund. Add in double Skadi buffs and we’re looking at a refund of 24.4%, then put him into a realistic farming setup with a 50% gauge CE, versus Casters with some overkill and we get a refund in the range of roughly 42%. While that isn’t exactly in the range of easy, brainless farming, it is more than enough to be flexible for Battlesuit farming setups - He meets 3-turn looping requirements fairly easily with Da Vinci Ruler buffing him up on turn 1 before swapping out for Skadi, for instance. Naturally, options like Nero Bride, or other 50% gauge supports also make things simple for him.

So typically for a Quick Servant, he meets farming benchmarks with a little bit of effort. But how’s the damage?

With his own buffs in consideration, Jiang’s NP hits for a poor 21.4k damage neutral. But that does kind of tear his specialties out of consideration - if he’s fighting enemies with the common Demonic trait, he dishes out a far more respectable 30k neutral. If he’s tackling Divine enemies, it comes out to a far better 46k.

But let’s speak in more practical terms - with a Skadi farming setup. I’ll use a 50% gauge CE, double Skadi with Da Vinci Ruler battlesuit swap setup to be clear. With that in consideration, Jiang is doing 61k damage waves 1 and 2, then 108k damage neutral wave 3. While that’s not really enough to meet universal farmer damage benchmarks, it’s more than sufficient when handling Casters or Berserkers. If we be kind and assume the bosses of wave 2 and 3 are Demonic and Divine trait respectively (which isn’t as rare as you may think, I call Demonic trait the “miniboss trait” for a reason), then he’s doing 83k damage neutral wave 2, and 223k damage neutral wave 3.

So yeah, he’s got some big damage backing him if he meets his traits. While that does permit him to handle some universal farming under the right circumstances, I imagine that’s very much a rarity, and one you won’t exactly be leaping to take advantage of.

Conclusion

So, how is Jiang Ziya overall? On one hand, he’s got a foxy fervor to exterminate that can’t be beat:

For an AOE Servant with normally-plain damage output, Jiang has the potential to hit really hard. Divine is hardly an uncommon trait, and the +125% (As each 1.5x multiplier stacks multiplicatively with each other) effective damage buffs built into his kit allow him to really bring the pain, especially if he has the proper support around him. For CQ scenarios, you add in the Quick Resistance Down his NP builds up and you’re looking at increasingly devastating damage on the regular.

Naturally, Jiang is a solid farmer. While he’s mostly relegated to Battlesuit setups on class advantage, which is hardly ideal, it’s still better than many Rider options out there, who often either lack gauge chargers or are Buster, requiring an even more action-intensive Koyanskaya Oberon setup to work. If he meets his trait damage bonuses he can be used on neutral nodes, but circumstances where that comes up and you can’t just use an alternative, more consistent farmer won’t be particularly frequent.

This may be overlooked by tunnel visioning on Jiang’s self-support, but he isn’t the worst swap-in out there to support a different damage dealer, especially if they’re Quick-focused. +15% Quick Up, Attack Up, and NP Strength Up is a very solid combination of damage buffs, and he can also provide 20% gauge and the assistance of his own NP’s damage+debuff if necessary. Hardly premier support, or even the best swap option out there, but he is reasonably adept at it.

However, he also needs to get whipped into shape:

By virtue of being a Rider farmer, Jiang faces pretty staunch competition from Habetrot. Hell, to even touch his event you will have Habetrot by default, so the comparison is practically handed to you. With how dominant Arts farming remains are present sheerly by convenience, it’s an uphill battle to outclass Habetrot, and Jiang has a tough time matching the fairy knight’s Black Grail setups even when he gets his trait bonuses. Naturally an individual’s Servant roster / support access can mean Jiang can still be a better option, but he really isn’t going to outperform Habetrot in most cases.

To my surprise, for a Servant who is pretty close to looking like a Caster (hell, he even qualifies for Grand Caster), Jiang lacks many utility options. Skill Seal is niche upon niche, but besides that he both lacks any defensive tools or other situationally useful support like NP Seal, gauge drain, Buff Removal Resist, whatever. He pretty much brings his offensive support and gauge charge, and that’s it. While it’s hardly a necessity to be useful, most Servants have…something of note.

Jiang Ziya is one of those Servants who surprisingly looks like they were built to be very meta-oriented but ultimately they just don’t have the juice or versatility to be that crazy.

It’s not to say he’s bad, or even mediocre. He remains a solid farming option with occasional applications in difficult content, owing to his potential to dish out insane damage to enemies with his trait bonuses. It’s just that he doesn't really offer much in the way of utility for CQ’s, and his farming is still ultimately inferior to welfare options in most circumstances.

A perfectly serviceable Rider for what he offers, and one that would probably be incredible were it 2 or more years ago he released, but in present times, mostly another good non-universal farmer to add to the pool. Rath™ Seal of Approval.

SERVANT 2 NAME

Introduction

For as much as I’d like to be outraged over the artist for Dobrynya basically modelling them after their Mistral OC from FFXI, I’d probably end up doing the same if I had the opportunity and/or artistic talent. Since I lack either.

And that aside, Dobrynya’s profile actually leaves it vague whether the catgirl is either Dobrynya himself or his wife, with the dragon being rode being the badass russian dude. Confusing all round, but it’s not like Fate isn’t full of similar Schroedinger’s Cat-type situations. Take Drake possibly being Elizabeth I in disguise, for one.

Overview

As an SR Rider, Dobrynya comes packing with a very hard offensively-leaned statline. Bearing the 2nd best Attack stat of her class/rarity and tied 2nd worst HP, she’s definitely following the route of a glass cannon, though as always, she’s entirely outclassed in raw stats by Rider Kintoki, since that boy is just a madman.

In the Passives lineup, Dobrynya furthers her aggressive statline with EX-rank Riding (well, you need it to ride dragons, anyway) and impressively-high A-rank Magic Resistance, giving her a neat line of protection against debuffs.
On the whole, Dobrynya has a pretty good start from her bases and passives.

First on her skill lineup is Eternally Youthful Warrior B+. A defensive skill at its heart, this skill provides Dobrynya with a modest 3-turn, 1-time Guts buff, as well as 1-time, 3-turn Debuff Immunity to eat up a singular debuff effect thrown her way, and lastly a 10 stars/turn buff on herself.

Well, that resolves most of her stargen problems right away, considering the Rider class’s high star weight.

Outside of that consideration, this skill is more or less what it says on the tin. Having a defensive option, even a flaky one like Guts, is good to keep around, and debuff immunity can similarly be helpful in the right circumstances for CQ content. The main draw is the stars/turn buff, supplementing Dobrynya’s ability to crit, hitting harder and getting more NP gauge out of her cards in one fell swoop.

Considering that some Guts skills have been dealt a worse hand, an 8-turn base cooldown on this skill isn’t too bad, even if it isn’t that powerful on the whole.

Next on the lineup is Berza Damask A. Phew, and here I thought I’d go an MMM without assessing a dual-card buff skill. This skill provides Dobrynya with a trio of 3-turn buffs, all offensive - 30% Buster Up, 30% Arts Up, and a 50% Anti-Dragon Effective Damage buff.

While the card boosters are par for the course, the Anti-Dragon trait buff is thematically appropriate and an…interesting niche. While it isn’t the most uncommon trait out there for Servant enemies (the abundance of Saberfaces, Lizes and one-way-or-another people treated as Dragon-blooded helps), it is hardly frequent to see on generic enemies. If it looks like a Dragon, it’s probably a dragon. The exceptions more or less amount to a specific kind of Oni, and Surtr. That’s pretty convenient for Tunguska’s event, at least.

So on the whole, you won’t be hitting for Dragon trait often - it’s the same reason Siegfried isn’t exactly a game-breaking meta Servant, but he has his own host of problems. It’s a very nice bonus to have when it comes up, but unless you’re tackling a CQ which features one of the…six Dragon-trait Servants Dobrynya has class advantage over, it’s probably not going to blow your mind.

It doesn’t help that this skill is on an 8-turn base cooldown. Really now? It could easily be 7 turns.

Last star of the show for Dobrynya’s skill lineup is Berza Bruk EX. This skill doubles up as both a 20% gauge charger for Dobrynya and a team buff, providing 30% Critical Damage Up and 30%...anti-Dragon Effective Damage to the party for 3 turns.

Man, she is really leaning in on the Anti-Dragon thing, isn’t she? I might have to quarantine her from interacting with my Caster Shuten.

At any rate, while gauge chargers are always good, 20% chargers tend to be an awkward number to work with, as it doesn’t enable a farming loop with double Koyanskaya+Oberon (you need 30% for that, or some other source of gauge charge), and doesn’t produce an instant NP from 50% gauge CE’s with most supports’ whole-party gauge charger (at least, without her Append Skill). It’s still good, just…far less practical than you may think.

Meanwhile, the critical damage buff is good for the entire party, not to mention the fact Dobrynya can use it effectively for herself, but even more Anti-Dragon focus just means…well, more effort is put into something she’s not going to be facing all the time.

Best believe, she WILL hit absurdly hard versus those Dragon enemies with all these buffs, but being very good at a singular niche (especially when you lack little else of value) will always be worse than being fairly good at fighting everything in general.

…at least they took the memo and made this skill 7-turns cooldown at base.

Zmey Gorynych, a Noble Phantasm which quite aptly embodies why I think Russian is a language made to murder the tongues of those who try to speak it, is a Buster AOE NP with a fairly wide host of effects.

First, it applies a decent 20% Buster Up buff to Dobrynya for 1 turn, scaling with Overcharge. On-NP steroids are always nice to have, though it’s a little sad it’s the same as Dobrynya’s existing buff type, so it isn’t providing as much of a boost as NP Strength Up or Attack Up would.

Next, of course, is the damage. This NP is notable for being defense-piercing, something which actually comes up fairly frequently, as a number of more recent bosses (including those in the Tunguska event) have unremovable passive defense buffs. Even if it isn’t statistically a benefit most of the time, it effectively translates to a damage boost versus a decent host of content to have around. The damage values themselves are typical for any Buster AOE NP, though.

Then, following that, we have the post-damage effects. A 1000 damage, 3-turn Burn that can be essentially ignored because Dobrynya has no Burn Amplification in her kit, and a much more respectable 20% Defense Down debuff to the targets for 3 turns.

Frankly, for a Buster NP, it’s pretty strong in a vacuum - Defense pierce, a built-in Steroid and damage ramping are all great traits to have, but it’s unfortunate Dobrynya’s not in the position to really abuse them.

Especially as her damage output…isn’t the greatest. Her NP with her own buffs in play against a neutral enemy comes out to… cough 15k. And I called Jiang’s NP damage off his own merits somewhat mediocre. While throwing some traditional Buster support helps out a lot, the bottom line is Dobrynya’s not doing much against non-Dragons.

When she is, however, fighting those scaly scourges, she pops off, so to speak. 27k neutral against Dragon-trait enemies is nothing to scoff at, and when you throw in a traditional double Merlin support lineup that jumps to 63k neutral.

While those numbers are certainly far from bad, especially since I haven’t gone into depth with Atk fous, CE’s, Mystic Codes and so on, the issue remains that there are plenty of Arts/Quick Servants, even fellow Riders, who can hit similar or better values versus neutral targets or more common traits, including her gacha buddy Jiang…and they can loop. She can’t.

Oof.

Conclusion

So how is Dobrynya on the whole? On one hand, she’s geared up to unleash a Burst Stream of Destruction all over the competition:

Dobrynya, outside of her own damage output, has a number of utility tools at play. Providing that Critical Damage and Dragon-effectiveness buff to her allies can be useful at times, and she has a fairly frequent Guts and Debuff Immunity to pop on herself that may make the difference in challenging content, especially if her Defense-pierce NP is set to come in handy.

When hitting her Dragon-trait effectiveness, Dobrynya can dish out a very respectable can of whoop-ass. The sheer buff numbers she produces for herself, especially if she can take advantage of her NP’s defense drop, can get pretty high, though it comes with the restriction of not being a very looping-friendly Buster Servant.

However, she’s also doomed to get Busted by the Blade of a Dragon-Destroying Swordsman before long:

I’ll just put this in one bullet point for conciseness: Dobrynya is ultimately just Rider Siegfried. There, I said it. While she certainly has more bells and whistles to work with, the bottom line is she’s inferior to almost every other option versus non-Dragons, and even when facing off Dragons she’s only competitive, not the premier choice around. To be utterly inept at farming, and only niche for CQ scenarios ultimately means, well…

Well, I can at least take solace in the fluffy catgirl, if nothing else. Dobrynya is a case of a Servant leaning too hard into the possible merits of an intense anti-trait focus, and not having the right tools to be viable, well, generally. It’s funny seeing her side-by-side in a gacha with a Servant who has a similar niche, but actually manages to perform outside of it, becoming a reasonable pick for certain farming and CQ scenarios instead of, as Dobrynya is, something you take as a meme or for thematics.

At least, unlike Siegfried, you can pair her with Georgios in a quest and not feel out of place from your class selection. I would just use Georgios to kill the dragons at that point, however.

I’ve got to say, writing the MMM isn’t exactly the ideal activity to perform on Christmas Eve, but it certainly does take your mind off family gatherings for a day. Tunguska itself is also a welcome distraction, for as long as the unfortunate raid bosses remain alive, acting as fuel to our tea-addled Bond-burning minds.

…I’m trying my hardest to get Karna to Bond level 12 so I can get him to 120, okay? I’m not addicted to Kama’s bath water tea!

Christmas is hardest on the downtrodden addicts, whether it be gacha or otherwise. With that in mind, remember to be kind and generous this Christmas and I hope you all have a great Holiday season. See you all in the New Year!
