The Modern Magus Magazine
Ah, is it that time again already? The time of year in which F2P’s weep over their inability to access the paid super-gacha(s! They put out two of them thangs this time!), everyone in general is showered by a mass sum of SQ, we all burn our wallets to cinders to attain the silly cool and powerful Anniversary SSR and, most importantly of all:

I’m frankly shocked it hasn’t been fixed yet (as of me writing this, those 3 Saint Quartz are taunting me!)
But I digress, there’s Servants to assess.
For all my immediate complaining, for the sake of not making my own writing of this MMM a living hell, I’m gonna have to settle on 1 name to call the Servant in question. While usually I growl like a dog at unnecessary localization changes to names or Lore terms in the Fate franchise, the name change to Aesc is one thing I’m okay with, considering Tonelico is borderline gibberish even in Japanese.
And it’s, well, actually an appropriate name for the time/setting of LB6. So Aesc it is. Helps me compartmentalize the mess that is who you mean when you say “Caster Artoria” in reference to this franchise - it could theoretically be like 3 different individual people, more if you can’t distinguish Saberfaces.

As an SSR Caster, Aesc isn’t exactly companions with a huge array of titans in the offensive department, but regardless she is the defacto strongest Caster in the game offensively, dethroning Sanzang after Nasu knows how long, and she does so while also not losing out too much defensively - 4th worst HP stat for her class/rarity isn’t exactly great, but Casters are generally fairly bulky so it’s good to work with, especially if it lets her start compensating for the Caster class’s poor Attack modifier and base Attack in general.
Speaking of compensating for her class’s weaknesses, she has a host of passives to supplement her very good stat distribution. Territory Creation provides a notable boost to her Arts cards’ NP gain and damage output, even if Buster is her primary card type, while Item Construction, Magic Resistance and Fae Eyes provide a host of handy passive effects, letting her dish out and resist Debuffs more effectively, and providing a significant defense against criticals at all times.
… It is interesting how her Fae Eyes ranks lower than both Castoria’s and Berserker Morgan’s, though. There’s probably some justification for it in LB6 I’m missing.
With that all in mind, how is Aesc overall? On the one hand, she’s charged with Queenly potential, and determined to save her motherland:
However, she’s also a failed scion, paving the way for the success of Castoria to follow her:
While certainly a pleasant surprise that definitively confirms the LB6 theme of the Summer event this year, Aesc is a bit of a lopsided Servant, having an absolutely overwhelmingly unique and powerful niche in difficult content that’s supplemented by a surprisingly underwhelming farming performance by contrast.
And that’s not necessarily a bad thing - if she were any better at farming she’d practically be the perfect Servant, which is unfair on principle. Being able to sufficiently farm her class advantage is enough to ensure she’s a fine staple to one’s roster while not suffocating you with her theoretical ubiquitousness.
That’s a lot of words for me to justify a Servant not being incredible in one thing, sheesh. Regardless she’s arguably the best offensive Caster in the game, and is well worth the hype for it, if not because she’s strong, but also fun to use and meddle around with. Rath™ Seal of Approval, with a recommendation.
Outro
On the whole, I’m a teensy bit disappointed we didn’t see anything bigger come of the double NA/JP streams this year, but maybe I was getting too hopeful after experiencing the big leap in the game’s baseline mechanics and routine with Ordeal Call and the Class Score’s introduction. I suppose we shouldn’t expect new additions to the game’s basic mechanics ALL the time, huh?
For all my blustering though, Aesc was a fine piece of bait to drain the Quartz supplies before the Summer Event this August, and with Summer forms of Baobhan Sidhe, Barghest, and (most importantly) Melusine all but confirmed, the pressure will truly be on.
Oh, and Summer Castoria, of course, who for all we know could be the Summer Skadi of Arts and manage to powercreep her OG version, which on principle feels like utter lunacy to type. But who knows?
I suppose we’ll find out together, shall we?
