It's easier to complete if you do. If you have a tight schedule like me, when you have time, I'd spend a couple bronze apples and maybe one or two silver. Never gold. That's for the next lotto event, with unlimited boxes. Unlimited Box Works here we come

There's no real difference between using two silver apples and using one gold apple, you know :-) But honestly, I'm not even too worried about being stingy with my apples between now and the other Christmas lottery, because Nerofest taught me that burnout and the amount of time that I can actually spend playing the game can be more limiting than the amount of apples that I have. I doubt I'll be able to spend more than 30 apples during the real Christmas lotto, regardless of how many I've got.

As long as you don't waste any natural AP regen, it should be just barely possible to clear the lottery without using apples, I think. But once you come down to the last day or two, if it feels like you aren't going to make it, then you can obviously use some apples to be on the safe side. We get several apples from the lottery and from the quests, so it's not the end of the world if you have to use a few.
