LOL seriously though just roll who you want. People generally like to have at least one ST and AOE servant of each class, but that isn't too important, especially early on, and having a strong support like Merlin would make that even less necessary. Take your time with that.

Like I said, it's much more worth it to decide on a few servants you actually like instead of just going for the best ones. If you like them because they are good then that's fair enough. Gameplay-wise, Merlin is THE servant to get this year. I think people tend to overestimate his value a bit, but it is a pretty widely-accepted fact that he is the first (and probably only) servant to truly break the game with how OP he is. His banner is in November/December BTW.

If you're looking for gameplay, Tamamo Caster (Rate-up for the Halloween rerun, I think) will be a great addition. She'll make Altria so much better. But really, I'd be a fool to not recommend Merlin. He'll be coming around Christmas/New Years, and is universally acknowledged as the most broken servant in the game.

But in all honesty, as powerful as those two are, both are always going to be available on the support page, so I'd say roll for a character you really like. Go on to the servants page, hit JP, and just take a look at the servants coming up. If any of them catch your eye, read up and see if you'd want to play with them. If not, continue or just roll for Merlin because he breaks the meta entirely.

I always roll for what I want instead of what's meta. However, if you want to break the game you can always roll for the meme itself, Merlin; who will be coming I think in december. He's an amazing buster support and arguably the best servant.
Jalter will be available soon as well, though I can't remember when. If you manage to get both you pretty much won the game.

People are saying to save for Merlin and it's justified as he is the best servant in the game by a distance. But since you're new I'd just look at the banners coming up and start filling out other spots for your roster. If you can get a waver or tamamo caster though, Waver, Tamamo, and Altria Archer can pretty much plow through all non lancer and non ruler fights. So get you a saber if you can to take care of those Lancers. Nero bride is a good saber who will also give Altria arts support.

Go with the servants you like. BUT from a gameplay perspective:
