Worth for Merlin?

I currently have NP2 Waver, (Thanks 'guaranteed' gacha) and am wondering if Merlin is worth it. I don't particularly care about usefulness in game because I'm pretty sure my current team can handle anything just fine, but is Merlin just THAT much better than Waver? Or is there any other reason to get him? I haven't really looked him up but I'm terrible at team composition so I don't think knowing what he would do would help me.

Merlin can do a couple things Waver couldn't. Merlin can heal, give stars, give invulnerability and give Buster buff. Merlin is a all-rounded support leaning slightly to buster team but he is like Waver and Andersen combined.

He is definitely good, no doubt. His NP gives you guaranteed Crit Stars for 5 turns, he has the best targetable buster boost in the game and also provides a one turn team invincibility; among other bonuses he offers. He is great, no doubt, and makes Buster Crit the most viable strategy going forward with him in the party.

Like you said though, you don’t NEED him. No servant is a necessity to beat any content and there is no certainty you’ll get him when you roll for him anyhow. So if you are asking should you save almost all your SQs for him, I personally wouldn’t. I enjoy rolling for new servants and trying some new and interesting team comps. If anything, Merlin kinda breaks that by making Buster Crit the best option always.

To answer your other part of the question, and this is just my personal opinion, I don’t think he is ALWAYS better than Waver. If I could only use one myself going forward I’d actually pick Waver. He fits into some comps better than Merlin does and his kit is still slightly better when you look at him across all team comps. Again, just my opinion as I’m sure many people will think me a fool for not bowing before Merlin haha. He is a great servant and depending on your team, will be the 1st or 2nd best servant with Waver. It sounds like you prefer to brute force your way through the content and aren’t too concerned with team comps, so I would put less value on him in your case. But the same advice I give to everyone still applies: if you like a servant, roll for them. If you don’t care then pass em up for the ones you like lol

Just a separate perspective on some of what you said (no hate against your opinion lol): firstly, if OP prefers to brute-force his way through things, it makes Merlin much more preferable to Waver imo, since he can arguably charge his entire team's NP better than Waver can, and also gives a party-wide invincibility rather than drain enemy NP, which imo is easier to work with.

Also, just saying, but even if you prefer to try out different comps and Merlin promotes buster-crit, it doesn't mean you have to run one with him if you have him, or even use him at all. Merlin doesn't take away from trying other team comps, he just promotes one specific team comp over all others. He's just good to have. He honestly works well with any comp just like waver, it's just that his third skill is wasted without a buster-crit servant, and he also kinda makes star generating (quick) servants on his team a bit redundant. Quick/non-buster teams that include him just won't be very efficient. They'll still be extremely strong.

To OP: He is considered one of the two best servants for a reason. That said, you definitely do not need him to play the game, even if you want him for harder challenges you can grab one from the support list. If you prefer someone else to him, just save your quartz. Waver will get you by just fine.

I can agree with you there. I just think a lot of people post that he is so much better than Waver that he makes him obsolete. Certainly not something you have said at all. I just think if people don’t look into it themselves and just go from posts, I think it can be a little misleading when it comes to that. For me, I’d definitely like to have Merlin, I just won’t be saving SQs for him. I prefer to try and get as many servants as I can so I can try more stuff out rather than just horde them all for Merlin...and then probably not get him lol. I just always think people should spread the wealth a little more lol. Especially F2P players since Merlin alone isn’t quite enough.

Yeah for sure, Waver is nowhere close to obsolete even with Merlin around. The reason I tend to hoard SQ rather than diversify my rolls is just to have a better chance of getting specific servants as opposed to a smaller chance to get a variety of servants. I have 440 quartz saved so far and plan to have more than 500 by the time he comes. Better chances to get him, but also much more salt if he doesn't show up lol. And yeah, you're right, just Merlin + R servants will have a pretty big damage problem.

Yea, I’ve currently got 440 SQs and any more I can grab set aside for the summer banners. I want to get as many of the gals as possible lol. They all have great art work and almost all of them have some pretty good kits but lean toward specific rolls. I think they can shine and be fun to use in the right team comps

Merlin's main advantage over Waver is that he spams his NP more easily despite an slightly lower NP gen, due to his passive which charges his NP 5% every turn. His NP is also very good. Gives crit stars + Heals team + charges team's NP 5%, all for every turn for 5 turns. This means that once he fires off his NP, he can passively charge his NP 10% every turn, making it easier for him to NP again. Amazingly spammable. Plus, it's STACKABLE. So the more he spams his NP, the better he gets. He can also give your team a one-turn invincibility, which is always nice to have.

TL;DR: Merlin's NP is amazing regardless of team comp, and due to it's stackability and Merlin's NP gen passive it is one of the most spammable in the game too.
