First I just want to say I’m not trying to salt anyone’s wounds who went all out for gramps but didn’t have luck on their side.
So I wasn’t interested in him but I had 30SQs left, did my roll and got super lucky. I have him at lvl 90 and his skills are currently at 5...and I just don’t get the love for him. The triple buster deck gives him some flex in team comps, but that’s kind of lost with the assassin modifier. The death gimmick is always just blah! It never works on anything but trash mobs. He lacks on star gen and NP gain compared to his classmates. If he was a berserker, this would all make sense to me. The survivability and buster buffs would all add up in that class.
I want to be clear that I don’t think he’s bad or anything. I just see such a large amount of hype associated with him that is usually reserved for the high tiered servants who really are the standouts in their respective classes. I have all the heavy hitters in the assassin class to compare him to as I’ve got grailed Shuten and Cleo and a max level Jack. I’ll relent and say he’s probably better than Shuten (she’s my 2nd fav servant though lol) but I definitely get way more use out of Cleo and Jack. I have Merlin to pair him with but I’ve yet to have a use for that combo against any of the tougher rider opponents. I’m certainly open to being wrong here. Like I said, I think he’s good, just not compared to the level of hype. Is there future content that he is key for? Sorry, just want to know what I’m missing lol!
I think he is simply a really badass character and therefore loved by a lot of people.
Everything you've pointed out is pretty much reflected here by gamepress' tierlist and their review of the servant. I was surprised to see his rating but after getting him myself I gotta agree with it. It's good to see that they are not following the hype, unlike the people on youtube.
I agree. Gamepress tends to be pretty close to the mark with their ratings on servants. Though I’m quite certain we all have our favorites who are grossly underrated haha!
He's cool. People like him more for his character than pure usefulness in the game, same as Illya, Saeba and other characters people love even if they aren't the most powerful in terms of gameplay.
Besides, it sounds like you might have expected a bit too much from him based on what you had, which isn't uncommon when you've got powerful top teir 5 star servants. I know that I was disappointed with Musashi a bit with the hype surrounding her when we got to try her out and even now borrowing 10/10/10 versions of her from friend lists. Its not that she's bad, but I was expecting more from her given the hype.
While I absolutely love Musashi, I can see where you’re coming from. For me she was more than worth the SQs since ST Sabers capable of high damage can be hard to come by. Since I don’t have Okita, Musashi more than fills that roll for me since Nero Bride just doesn’t pack the punch she deserves lol.
And you’re right on the mark. I’ve been very lucky in the assassin class (after having the worst luck for a VERY long time) in having Cleo, Jack and Shuten who all fill their particular rolls very well. So I had some inflated hopes for Gramps based on his hype and the effectiveness of the other 5* assassins
I think he is an incredibly badass character; but after borrowing him a few times and using him in Babylonia I gotta agree.
I find JTR a lot more useful and will be saving for her in November (provided I don’t get lucky before then) instead.
I think you’re missing the point with gramps. You don’t build a team around him, you just solo with him. His skill set and deck make it significantly easier to solo than with other servants
Definitely a good point. Looking at him from a solo stance, I can see where he could be useful. I kind of agree that he doesn’t make a lot of team comps shine. But solo was certainly an aspect I overlooked
He is very sturdy with a st np. Cleo is probably the better buster assassin all around though.
his role in the story is a good enought reason to like him.
and he is a stellar solo servant, not thet good in team but a good servant.

she is so underrated even tho she is easly one of the strongest 5 star in game (not as broken as the top tier but almost there)
Ah, another player who appreciates Cleo’s greatness lol! She quickly became one of my favorite servants in the game and I feel like she’s overlooked quite a bit. Props to you for appreciating Cleo!
For a triple buster deck servant with buster NP, his np gen and star gen are actually top tier. His Q is of similar quality to Jack's Q baseline, and art packs one of the highest single Art gen in the entire game, with 1% base gen @ 3 hits.
His niche is his buster packed deck along with a hardy physique on an assassin, which is very rare.
Not to suck KH's dick but you saying that triple buster deck is lost with the assassin modifier is a moot point, since all assassins are affected by that. He can deal more raw damage with Buster deck as well as easy activated steroid from protection from faith.
Shuten gens more stars, more opportunity window to gain NP, NP effects are a lot better while NP being aoe. They do different things.
King Hassan actually has the highest damage of all assasin plus his 3 buster card is even better with buster chain hits
He has a great NP gain (1art card is enough) and Crit stars gain even better than riders
His quick card give you a good amount of stars but don’t rely on him for star generations
He is so durable that class advantage doesn’t matter
He is Resisted to charm and instant death
Beyond the answers you already got (coolness and solo runs), one thing is that his passives (immune to instakill, high charm and debuff resistance) can help out in some challenge quests, though the other reasons are more important generally.
