Which Lancer and a quick thanks.

So, first off I wanted to thank the people in this community. I had a really rough patch with this game in July and vented how it felt like I was screwing up because I kept drawing imo at the time mediocre servants. I was encouraged to keep playing and eventually I'd get servants I really enjoy. Since then that did happen and I just really wanted to thank the community for being so kind and supportive.

The actual question is I currently have a level 70 Cu and will soon have a level 80 Vlad Extra. Their write ups seem to imply they play the same sort of role; a tanky Lancer with mediocre damage, with Vlad having extra damage against evil as the key difference. Does this make Vlad a better Lancer than Cu for general use, or do they each have a specific purpose that I have missed? I plan on grailing Cu eventually regardless because I just love him as a character.

Cu isn't actually tanky so much as he's evasive. He'll become someone hard to kill because his evade lasts for 3 attacks rather than a single turn. His Guts skill lets him cheat a potential death for 5 turns.

Vlad Extra is tanky, He's made to actually get hit and soak it through a mix of healing and defense buffs.

Honestly, I'd go with Cu. He's easy to get to NP5 and his NP has a chance of instakill on non-servants. Team him up with a good support (Hans, Waver, Merlin, Tamamo) and you'll be set. I've had him save my team from failure several times.

they have different goal
Vlad is a semi support/ tank for the main damage dealer of the team. while he is able to do some damage, he is there for utility whit crit star, tattics and tount. Cu is a back line trump card. if your main team got killed, he will get in fight and end it for you.
they have different role, so have no fear , grail cu and use vlad to.
