what does the defense debuff do exactly?

Defense down is basically attack up. And it stacks.

Defense is the amount of damage that will get reduced/increased. A buff to defense will decrease the damage you take by that amount (So a 15% bonus means you'll only take 85% damage), while a debuff will increase it (A 20% debuff means you'll take 120%).
