Sometimes its not a question of how many quartz u have but what your luck stat is. A man with EX luck with a single ticket would have no need for worry but a man with E rank luck and 300 quartz would feel the weight of his every pull. Owning a luck stat i consider "F-" should i even bother? and if your wondering why i consider myself F- try reading my previous questions.
Uh, really up to you mate. Obviously saving will give you better odds than not, regardless of how lucky you are. If you think Merlin will be worth it, then save. The result is never predetermined, so not thinking you will get him is never a good reason not to save. If you can't be bothered saving then don't : /

Yeah, if you ask me that's the right attitude. Don't go in expecting anything, just be happy if you get something. Doesn't really stop the salt tho lol

Well what I think is that you will never get him unless you will roll. You will never get what you want without you gambling to get him. And what gives you the guarantee that if you will miss his banner, you will get the SSR on the rate up where you will use your quartz by then? What I am trying to say is try to get him at least, who knows you can get him immediately. As for me, I'll roll since I am in need of a good Buster Support. I have tamamo but I don't have that many good arts servants. Only buster ones so Merlin is a must. Not that interested in King Hassan since I have Jack and I have Rama as an Alternative to Musashi but I'll try to get her as well.
I’m a class half full kind of person, and how I see it is even if you only spend three quartz on a single roll, that’s still a chance to get him! You won’t know until you press that button. There may very well be a Grand Caster in your future. It’s a risk we’re all going to take! :D
If you want to know the probability of you getting a five star with X amount of pulls you can always use the formula:
Chance = 1 - (0.99^X) where X is the number of summons.
It won’t guarantee anything but at least you’ll have an idea about your odds of getting a five star
For OP's reference, the formula is 1 - (0.993^X) for a single rate-up SSR like Merlin (as in, it gives you the probability that you get AT LEAST 1 Merlin, you could get more).
FYI, you'd need around 98 rolls, or 294 quartz, for a 1/2 chance of getting Merlin. Between now and Merlin's projected release, we should get something like 230 quartz from logins, maintenance and events. This would give you about a 41% chance for Merlin. Not great, but not horrible either.
Rolling is half the fun of this game even when it fails horribly. Those rainbow sparkles are almost more exciting than an orgasm...almost :p yes roll even if you fail. Also if there's ever a gameplay time to whale it would be the Merlin banner. He does break the game.
As always, save for the servants you really want. You'll be more satisfied that way.
Though Merlin is just too good to pass, so spare a little bit of your tickets/quartz. Just the 5 monthly tickets or a 10 roll will do. You don't need to go all out for him if you don't want him that much because everyone will try to roll for him.
I'm just gonna spend 10-15 tickets for him. If i didn't get him, then i'll go straight for the paid caster banner.
I honestly understand the reluctance when it comes to saving up your quartz and mass summoning. In another game (Summoner's War), I saved up a bunch of stones to try to get a particular monster and didn't get him. Then I rage-purchased a few hundred dollars worth of stones more, and still didn't get him. I was pretty unhappy. After that day, I never mass summoned again. I just started using summoning scrolls and stones as I got them, and it honestly worked out better that way. Then I didn't really have any specific expectations, so I wasn't too bummed if I didn't get anything good, and I was pleasantly surprised if I did. However, that game didn't have limited time monsters that you could never try to get again after the events or whatever, so it's also kind of a different thing.
It really just boils down to how badly you want Merlin though. I don't know whether or not you will get him if you save up and roll for him, but I do know that you absolutely won't get him if you don't try.
